When the Internet was first invented in the early 1990s, many companies saw its potential. But they had several concerns. It was not secure, not robust, and full of crime – sound familiar? So, they built their own internets. These were proprietary, permissioned networks using the Internet protocols. They were called Intranets. Over time, however, as the public infrastructure became robust and global, they dropped these closed systems and embraced the public Internet. A similar thing is happening today with blockchains. As the blockchain world evolves into Web3, enterprises are beginning to understand that you can build robust applications on public networks that are far more powerful, just as the shift from Intranets to the Internet brought new capabilities to companies decades ago.
